I am Joshua Mitchell, a guest writer from Cambridge House Community College in Valencia. I have been on a week long work experience programme with RH Inmobiliaria - the owners Craig and John very kindly agreed to take me on.
Work experience is a programme in the English curriculum that enables the students to experience the world of work and therefore giving the students an insight into the world after school. This programme doesn't exist in Spanish state schools but in England its a vital part of the curriculum.
During my week long experience with the company I had to do many things from desk work, such as sorting out and storing invoices, to field work, like evaluating houses, going to various registry and information offices and showing people round different properties. On day one I went with Daniel and John to a social security office in Paterna to collect information on a would-be buyer. I was quite nervous on Monday as I had no idea what the experience would entail. On the second day it was all about desk work, I had to sort out and store various invoices then check that all the building calculations were correct. The following day consisted of evaluating a house and I also learnt how to break bad news about a property valuation. On Thursday, a couple came into the office to view some houses and we showed them a range of houses with various prices and plot sizes.
I learnt a lot from the experience, I learnt that being punctual and dressing smartly all plays a part in any job, it shows that you are professional. I also learnt a lot about estate agency, for example there many different processes involved when buying and selling a house. I learnt that you need to be polite to the customers using your service, or they, quite simply, will not buy a house from you. It is important to be honest with customers because if you're not, sooner or later, they will find out that you where lying.
